What is Arbitrage Betting? Complete Beginner's Guide 2026
Arbitrage betting — arbing or sure betting — means placing bets on every possible outcome of an event across different bookmakers, guaranteeing a profit whatever the result. It works because bookmakers set odds independently. When their combined implied probabilities add up to less than 100%, a gap exists — that gap is your guaranteed profit margin.
Why Arbs Exist
Every bookmaker builds a margin into their odds. An event with two roughly equal outcomes might be priced at 1.90 / 1.90 — the implied probabilities are 52.6% + 52.6% = 105.2%. The excess 5.2% is the bookmaker's edge.
Arbs occur when two bookmakers disagree enough that their combined implied probabilities fall below 100%. Bookmaker A offers 2.10 on Team A; Bookmaker B offers 2.10 on Team B. Combined: 47.6% + 47.6% = 95.2%. The 4.8% gap is your profit margin. Stake correctly and you guarantee a return on both outcomes.
The Maths — How to Identify an Arb
Profit % = (1 − Arb Margin) × 100
Example: 2-Way Arb
£60 profit on £1,000 staked is 6% — guaranteed, regardless of the result. The stake split is calculated so both outcomes return the same amount.
Stake on Outcome B = Total Stake × (1 ÷ Odds B) ÷ Arb Margin
3-Way Arbs — Football and Other Markets
For markets with three outcomes (Win/Draw/Loss), the same logic applies across three bookmakers. The arb margin check: (1÷Odds A) + (1÷Odds Draw) + (1÷Odds B) must be less than 1.00. Three-way arbs are rarer because one more bookmaker must be simultaneously offering a divergent price.
How to Find Arbitrage Opportunities
Manual method: Compare odds across 5–8 bookmakers for the same market. Calculate the implied probabilities and check if they sum below 100%. Use BetMan's Arb Finder — enter odds from two or three bookmakers and it instantly tells you whether an arb exists and how to split the stake.
Automated scanners: Paid services like OddsPortal, RebelBetting and OddsMonkey scan hundreds of markets in real time and flag live arbs. For serious arbers, this is more practical than manual searching.
When to look: Arbs appear most often when odds first open (market mispricing), when one bookmaker is slow to update after injury news, and on less liquid markets where bookmakers pay less attention.
How Long Do Arbs Last?
In major football markets: 5–20 minutes before odds converge. In less liquid markets (lower league football, niche sports): sometimes hours. The window is short because sharp money and bookmaker traders quickly close the gap. Speed is essential — by the time you've confirmed the arb and placed both bets, one price may have moved.
Realistic Returns
Arb margins typically range from 1–5%. On £1,000 total stake per arb at 3% average margin, that's £30 per arb. Active arbers placing 5–10 arbs daily with £1,000–£5,000 bankroll can generate £500–£2,000/month, but this requires speed, multiple accounts and significant starting capital.
Smaller-scale arbers with £500 working capital and 2–3 arbs per day can realistically earn £150–£400/month before account restrictions reduce their options.
Risks and Limitations
Account restrictions. This is the main risk. Bookmakers identify arbers and limit their stakes or close accounts. Managing multiple accounts, using responsible bet sizes, and not always staking maximum amounts extends your window.
Odds moving mid-placement. If one bookmaker's odds change between placing the first and second bet, the arb may no longer exist — and you've placed a real, uncovered position. Always place the less liquid side first.
Human error. Mistyping a stake or choosing the wrong market on one side of the arb means you have an unhedged position. Use BetMan's Arb Finder to confirm the correct stake split before placing.
Arbing is legal but explicitly against most bookmaker terms of service. Accounts are regularly restricted. Budget for account replacement costs and maintain a diverse portfolio of bookmaker accounts.
